Unbelievable. Ridiculous. Hopeless. A few of the more popular [G-rated] words being used to describe this 2016 election.
Yet here we are. Sitting in a drama sauna as Twitter wars rage on. The secrets exposed are even worse than the person who thinks that sitting right beside you – without a single article of clothing on – is acceptable sauna etiquette. The roar of opinions is rising with the temperature and neither are letting up anytime soon.
But there is one thing that every single person in this country has in common: we are all in the middle of it. Together [insert cringe]. We are all faced with the same uncertainty, the same decisions to make, the same reality of whatever comes next. A less-than-ideal predicament.
So Christians, what are we doing?
How are we handling this? I see a variety of tactics being used, most of which are successful…if success is stirring the overflowing pot.
Facebook statuses won’t change anything. A debate won’t breach the real gap between safety and reality. It’s too big. It’s too dark. Not even a vote can solve the real problem here. Yes, that is what I said. No, I am not discouraging patriotic duties – breathe. The reality of our current situation is bigger than that. The source of evil is not a presidential candidate, and the solution is not an election. They can take away all rights and weapons or give us more of both, but the destruction will continue.
The source of evil is not a presidential candidate, and the solution is not an election.
No amount of earthly effort can stand against the darkness we live in.
But a supernatural heart change can.
The more chaos overtakes our world, the larger the platform gets for Jesus to blow people’s minds. His light only gets brighter as everything else gets darker.
Think about it. Not only is everyone in our country consumed by this, the whole world is watching. The world. They watch as we fight, with each other and against the fear of uncertainty that overshadows any well-worded [or more likely the opposite] debate.
But we are fighting the wrong enemy.
Presidential candidates are not our problem. A political mess? Absolutely. Twisted? Don’t get me started. The obvious manipulation makes my blood boil and, on a personal level, the insensitivity takes some pretty low blows. As someone whose past includes things like rape, abuse, and sexual harassment, I seldom hear a debate without revisiting old struggles.
But broken glass cuts, and so do broken people. They need Jesus just like we do. No more, no less, just Jesus. We are all victims of a fallen world.
The real enemy is the same one who has always been there. He lurks behind the scenes, using puppets and sin to wreak havoc in every way possible.
The real enemy is Satan (Ephesians 6:12).
Fortunately, we serve a God who is much bigger. John 1:5 tells us that “the light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it”. He has already won the fight, and when we surrender our lives to Him that victory is ours too (1 Corinthians 15:57). But [for us] the tangible fruition of that ultimate victory is still in the future, so we have to fight with what we have here on earth while we wait for Jesus to return. Thankfully we have weapons designed specifically for this battle, one of which is prayer (Ephesians 6).
So my question is this:
What would it look like if we started praying for a radical heart change to take place in whoever gets elected?
I’m talking about a complete, 180-degree turn that leaves heads spinning as it happens. The kind of change that doesn’t make sense, and therefore reveals an undeniable higher power characterized by grace. In other words, people see Jesus. A domino effect of truth sparked by a leader who suddenly recognizes God as the provider of such a powerful position. Not someone who shoves Christianity down people’s throats – that’s not Jesus’ style – but through faith unlocks the ability to make decisions infused with the kind of grace and wisdom that supersedes human logic.
It’s hard to even imagine, isn’t it? And that is exactly why it’s possible. We serve a God who has defeating death on his resume. He has specialized in turning this kind of situation upside down since, well, forever. Who better to hand the mess to than the one who knows every intricate detail of each heart involved?
I’ve heard the many arguments about why certain political issues deem all of this irrelevant. But the God I know parts seas and walks on water. If you have a better idea, go write an article about it. My money’s on Him.
As long as we keep fighting the wrong enemies we will keep losing. Satan will continue to carry out his not-so-disguised destruction as we exhaust ourselves trying to cover real ground on a treadmill. If he can keep our attention on the chaos, he can accomplish his goal of distracting us from the victory that is already ours. But, if we can remember that all he is capable of is getting us to think we are defeated , he will cower as we claim truth.
If we can remember that all Satan is capable of is getting us to think we are defeated , he will cower as we claim truth.
I know, it sounds too far-fetched. That’s why it’s called supernatural, and why we have given our lives to the One who makes it possible.
If we really want to fight for our future and our country we have to start fighting for the people leading it. And that fight starts on our knees. There’s only one way to make America, or anything else, great again.
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
FOUR WAYS WE CAN CHANGE THE COURSE OF THIS POLITICAL MESS:
- Remember who the real enemy is (1 Peter 5:8)
- Use the tools we have been given to fight back (Ephesians 6)
- Remember who we serve, and the ultimate power He has proven by what He’s already done (John 16:33)
- Proclaim His victory to everyone who will listen. He will take care of coming through, let’s get people’s attention so they see Him when He does. (Mark 16:15)
By the way, if you are that person who sits butt-naked next to people in the saunua…dude. Come on. Get it together.
